Description of the picture:
Equestrian portrait of Gaspard de Guzmán, Baron Olivares – Diego Velazquez. 1632-1633. Canvas, oil. 240×314
The count is shown in front of the battlefield proudly sitting on a rearing stallion. Turning over his shoulder, he points into the distance, where in the middle of a beautiful landscape there is a battle. The coloristic decision of this ceremonial portrait is based on a combination of cool colors that dominate the distant plane, and warm colors, the main ones in the first. Thanks to this, the figure of the minister and the horse seem materially large and very close to the viewer, and the landscape is infinitely deep."
